Welcome to our second annual end of season alternative awards that we hand out to SPL players. Following in the next week will be our Most Improved Player and MVP awards, but we shall start with the No. 12 award (previously named 12th Man) for the best squad player in the SPL this season. Mentioned in this blog are the six best players who couldn’t always count on themselves starting for their side, but made a big contribution nonetheless over the course of the season. Last year’s winner, Johnny Russell, had more of a starring role this year so a new victor is guaranteed.

Joe Cardle (Dunfermline)

The team line-ups from last Monday’s relegation decider between Hibs and Dunfermline told you everything you need to know about Dunfermline’s faith in Joe Cardle to perform for 90 minutes. Here was a game that they literally had to win to stay in the division and arguably their most creative player this season began the game on the bench. The trouble is the decision wasn’t even a knock on Cardle’s value to the squad, it was just the calculation that he’d be of greater value coming on to provide a spark in a tight game. As it was, Dunfermline were 3-0 down in 15 minutes and Cardle was thrown on in ultimately futile desperation.

Cardle is the archetypal player for this award: he has notched eight goals from the wings but has failed to hold down a regular place; a game changing substitute appearance can easily be followed by two or three mediocre starts and relegation again to the bench, where the cycle begins once again. The English born winger wasn’t even a nailed on starter when Dunfermline successfully navigated last season’s First Division as champions and his surprisingly advanced age of 25 reflects a career that has been a gradual climb up until this point. His restricted skill-set will probably hold him back from being an established SPL player but he certainly proved himself a worthy member on a team that bravely fought against relegation.

Nigel Hasselbaink (St Mirren)

Fitting the criteria for a list such as this one is probably where most people thought Nigel Hasselbaink would feature after news travelled around on his decision to sign for Danny Lennon’s St Mirren. At Hamilton he’d caught the eye in fleeting glimpses but presumably couldn’t shine too bright on a side that was crashing out of the division at an inevitable pace. St Mirren would offer a better platform for his talents but then again we still weren’t sure if he had the consistency to perform every week in the SPL. A full season in black and white later, and we’ve pretty much been proved right.

Things seem to go for St Mirren whenever Hasselbaink is in the team and playing well. He provides an energy and almost maverick source of creativity at the attacking end; it’s not that he possesses any real vision or great passing, but he can often cause chaos in the opposing penalty area when things are going right for him. His manager lacked patience with his inconsistency, and thus Hasselbaink flitted between starting and coming off the bench, but as the season wore on it appeared Lennon considered it was worth persevering with Hasselbaink’s off days just to insure he was in the starting eleven when things were clicking. Next season will be a good indicator of where the 21-year old’s career is headed.

Chris Humphrey (Motherwell)

In terms of starts to games ratio, Chris Humphrey has gone backwards from last season. Then, Motherwell liked to favour a 4-3-3 attacking formation with John Sutton as the focal point, Jamie Murphy playing off as the roaming second striker and Humphrey providing the outlet on the right wing. This season saw a shift in system as the inclusion of Nicky Law on the left of midfield set out a more orthodox 4-4-2 that suited striker Michael Higdon, who lacked a little in mobility and link-up play to consistently perform in a lone-striker’s role. The change wasn’t as kind to Humphrey who has struggled a little without the extra space and protection, along with the competition from Omar Daley at the right midfield spot.

That’s not to say the guy hasn’t performed this season. His final ball is still as wayward, and his inconsistency is startling even for a winger, but there is no doubting that the 24-year old has a frightening amount of pace and the required dribbling skills to keep the ball under control as he flies past opposing full-backs. As a result he has stayed a powerful tool and important part of a squad that has surprised the league by finishing as the best of the rest behind the Old Firm.

Lee McCulloch (Rangers)

Csaba Laszlo once commented on Eggert Jonsson that he’d used him in so many different positions that you could consider it to be abuse; if Ally McCoist had an equally eccentric grasp of the English language then he may say the same about his use of Lee McCulloch this season. The former Scotland internationalist starred on the left wing at the peak of his career but, with pace and technique diminishing with age, he has happily taken up every central position going at Ibrox bar ousting Allan McGregor.

McCulloch has received admiration from his home crowd with a playing style that mirrors the current day-to-day struggle at Ibrox to keep Rangers in business: doing the best with limited resources to maintain the reputation of a once-feared powerhouse. His role in helping deny Celtic a league-title clinching win at Ibrox should be regarded as one of the more valuable performances in Rangers’ recent history: playing as an emergency-striker McCulloch bullied both Thomas Rogne and Charlie Mulgrew, and set the tone for an unlikely Rangers victory on a day that was set-up to see Celtic burying their fiercest rivals.

Georgios Samaras (Celtic)

It’s now just over two years ago that a group of Celtic fans parked themselves outside the club’s stadium, waited impatiently for the team bus to do likewise, and then screamed abuse at every Celtic player as they trudged off the coach following their 2-0 defeat to Ross County in the Scottish Cup semi-final. Every player got their share but the real vitriol was saved for Georgios Samaras, who at the time seemed to epitomise the problems within the squad: dispassionate, underperforming and overpaid. It was a matter of when, not if, Samaras would be jettisoned from Lennoxtown.

Any prediction to the contrary would have been greeted with derisory exclaims, but it is to the credit of the player, and his manager, that he has turned his Celtic career around and established himself as an integral part of Neil Lennon’s squad. He may have only started 19 league fixtures but that, in itself, has been a large part of the player’s growth. Despite the transfer fees he has tallied, and the generous wages he must be on, Samaras has not succumb to any diva stereotypes but instead turned himself into a unorthodox winger that is now a valuable piece in Lennon’s tactical arsenal. His height and ability to run with the ball gives him an unusual combination of strengths that even the more defensively balanced of full-backs must have nightmare defending against.

But the winner is…

Rudi Skacel (Hearts)

This seems a ridiculous choice as the winner of the best squad player because every time “a goal at Tynecastle” is hollered on BBC Scotland’s ‘Open All Mics’ it’s almost accurately presumptuous to think of Rudi Skacel as its scorer. What a maroon jersey does to the man’s shooting abilities is a question that only science or a student of supernaturalism could answer: since leaving the Czech Republic to sign for Marseille in 2003 he has scored 62 career goals, 46 of which have been for Hearts; this season he has hit the net 16 times, his nearest challenger for the club’s top goalscorer accolade is Jamie Hamill with five; and in a game against St Mirren in January he scored a hat-trick with every goal coming from outside the penalty area.

How does a man who does all this make only 19 league starts for an SPL Club? The answer is simple: it’s all he does. It still seems ridiculous to say but the way in which modern football has evolved has made the classic goal poacher, score-and-does-nothing-else player a rarity at the top flight. Even those that have survived the evolution tend to play up-front, where they are less influential on the manner of football played by their team, but Skacel still operates in midfield. Managers and coaches now want all their players to maintain full levels of discipline and concentration in executing their strategies; Skacel jogs around the centre of the park like he’s still doing warm up, the only time he breaks out into a sprint is if there is a chance he can lash the ball into the back of the net at the end of it.

It’s this reason why Paulo Sergio has often opted to leave him on the bench for some of the tougher games. When you need everyone to be defensively tuned-in he is a luxury that would make any manager nervous, especially one as meticulous as Sergio. Although the decision to start him against Celtic in the cup semi-final hints at Sergio coming around to the argument that Rudi Skacel is a luxury you cannot live without.

We look back on a little Glasgow get-together in Govan yesterday, as Celtic’s champagne is put on hold - although Rangers blow the opportunity to rack up a ‘DVD of the match’ scoreline. Killie beat Motherwell, and we suitably laud the trophy winning Rugby Park side. There’s also the added intrigue at the bottom after a week which saw the Hibee-basher Jim Jefferies become Dunfermline manager, with a mandate to relegate Hibernian.

Focus is on the battle for survival in the First Division, as well as a suitably entertaining encounter between two of Scottish football’s most passionate advocates of attacking football: Elvis 2 - 5 Yogi. Jukebox is doing the business with East Fife while Robbie Winters and young-enough-to-be-his-son Stevie May are firing Alloa to the Third Division title.

There’s a seven-game week of predictions, while Where are they Now? and Punt of the Week are also involved.

Do enjoy.

Aberdeen did their utmost to get their house in order during the January transfer window, including dishing out some contract extensions to players with expiring deals. Craig Fowler buries past perceptions to find out what Andrew Considine has done to deserve a new deal to stay at Pittodrie.

Around two weeks ago, work related boredom caused a neglect in professionalism and the inevitable fixation with the latest stories being rushed out by Sky Sports News. The tabs at the bottom of the screen flicked away as I took in each snippet with varying degrees of interest. Then the screen arrived with the news that Aberdeen had reached contractual agreements with two existing players; Scott Vernon (fair enough) and Andrew Considine… Sorry, what? Re-reading the screen more than once was necessary for the absurdity of the words to sink in. Apparently the same happened to the technology operating these continuously looping “news tabs”, because it stuck on this particular tab for over five minutes. When it did restart it delivered further bewilderment by stating the length of the contract, running until 2015.

Surely the management team (for pushing this deal) and the board of directors (for sanctioning it) were making a mistake? Here was a player who has been a constant in an Aberdeen team over the past five years that, at best, could be described as mediocre, and who couldn’t even be argued as the best of a bad bunch. Whether at full-back or centre half, he committed errors with alarming regularity and resembled something of poor man’s Gary Caldwell – without the footballing ability. As they had done with Zander Diamond, surely it was time to ship out a chronically under-performing defender? The last I knew about their opinion regarding the player, Aberdeen supporters were not fans of their home-grown defender, and had to be up in arms with this latest news.

Well, in case you needed a reminder, a lot can happen in football in a short space of time. Dons fans are, on the whole, happy with the fact that Considine could potentially be an Aberdeen player for at least another three years, and particularly pleased with the way the club got the situation sorted long before the summer. Not only that, fans seemed perfectly content when the defender was handed the captain’s armband on a temporary basis around the same time. Written off by many as a total bomb-scare at the end of last season, Considine was now seen as dependable enough to lead the team into battle each week.

Well, how did this happen? The reason is obvious, but with an element of surprise: Considine has matured as a defender. His positioning and anticipation has improved while his habit of suffering dreadful lapses in concentration has decreased. It’s what you expect from a maturing defender as they garner enough playing time to develop their game, but you’d presume Considine was of age where he’d all ready matured as much as he was ever going to? Well here’s the pay-off: Andrew Considine is still only 24.

It feels like the 6ft 4inn Aberdonian has been around for ever. He made his début against Dundee in May 2004, just over a month after his 17th birthday and was a first team regular before he turned 20; racking up over 30 appearances as Aberdeen secured 3rd spot and a place in the UEFA Cup at the end of the 06/07′ season. Consistent progression in his development would have seen Considine feature for Scotland by now, but the individual errors began to pile up and the patience from the fans - granted to academy graduates awkwardly trying to find their feet - evaporated. That, combined with a strange insistence from his two previous managers (Calderwood and McGhee) of trying him out at full-back, ruined his confidence.

It’d probably be a little harsh to point out the coincidence of Zander Diamond leaving town and Considine getting better - as a central defensive partner Youl Maweene was hardly Ledley King - but their form does suggest that the team has eventually begun to execute Craig Brown’s game-plan, and Considine is benefiting from that. He’s playing consistently in his favoured position, in a side that are well organised and like to defend as a team. Not to mention the fact he has had Kari Arnason and Issac Osbourne patrolling the grounds in front of him all season. Those two offer defensive protection and a physical presence that few other midfields can rival. On the whole, Considine has found himself being isolated less and his play improving week by week as he rebuilds his confidence. The bomb-scare moments have still popped in every now and again, but for the first time in his career the frequency is diminishing.

Aberdeen’s run currently stands at one loss in eleven fixtures, including five clean sheets, and they currently sit in sixth place with a better defensive record than any of the teams chasing them. The addition of Mark Reynolds has solidified things further in the month of January, and the corps have also been bolstered by the arrival of Russell Anderson. The former skipper was immediately awarded the captain’s armband upon his return and Brown’s preference for a flat back four may cause Considine some concern, with the possibility one of the three may get shunted out to full-back. But the fact that there is even an argument over who should start when picking two of those three players shows how much he has rebuilt his reputation in such a short space of time.

Anderson was a great player first time around, but he is now 33 years old and it would make no sense to unsettle the younger player’s improvement for the sake of a short -term fix. And Considine has done enough this season to earn that spot in the starting eleven, and that new contract.

Last week saw the closure of the January Transfer Window and the Scottish Cup fifth round - neither of which brought any joy to Rangers fans. We dissect the chaos and Govan, while bestowing deserved plaudits on Dundee United.

There’s also the march of Celtic, while we look back at two matches which nearly provided shocks - and could still when the Valentine’s Day replays role around.

Last night saw the remarkable sacking of Gary Bollan by Livingston; naturally that kicks off an intriguing SFL section. After consecutive promotions, what was behind Ged Nixon’s decision, and who’s next for the Almondvale hottest.

Spliced with the Cup action will be some transfer news, speculation and other tidbits. Including Gardyne for United, Casilinuovo signing on for Raith and the future of Scotland’s top scorer Ryan Donnelly.

[Show recorded before Monday’s draw, thus no follow-on reaction from what balls were picked out by AVB and Lippi!]

There will also be Where are they Now? and law-based Punt of the Week, the remnants of SFL news not covered during Part One, and the return of the Predictions league - with just one point between the lads.

Happy New Year, and enjoy the show.

We have a full compliment of presenters his week, again, and we are ready to bring you all the Scottish football action, starting with a timely look at what is going wrong in Aberdeen - and whether one of the biggest names in Scottish football could truly be relegated.

There were wins for Rangers and Celtic, the latter with a flat/professional [depending on which presenter you agree with] win over Dundee United. And the former requiring a fairly blatant dive to help them over the line against Dunfermline.

We’ll also round up the rest of the results, ranging from Hearts to Caley, and even a cheeky wee electrical fire at Fir Park.

Jocky’s gone in the lower leagues! We’ll mourn the departure of the ‘tache, while hailing the interminable march of Ross County, the improvement of Stenhousemuir and the impact of Hibs kid Lewis Horner at East Stirlingshire.

The prediction league is back [we’ve finally updated the score; check below] and we’ll have our usual features Punt of the Week and Where are they Now?

Enjoy the show, friends.

Needless to say there will be plenty of praise heading Motherwell’s way for yet another win over Aberdeen, as well as St Mirren’s win over a suicidal Dunfermline.

The SFL roundup takes a back seat this week as we look back on Scottish Cup third round weekend, including several tales of charming quirk and all that usual crap you get from the ‘magic of the Cup.’

Also, Airdrie hit 11, Culter get a famous draw and Auchinleck Talbot will represent the juniors in Round 4.

And, with Craig taking a sensational lead in the Prediction League last week, the battle continues with a preview of this week’s SPL servings.

Forrest, Wylde, Kelly, Rhodes; the future’s bright, the future’s not Oranje.

Plenty of chat in the SFL section, from the battle at the top of SFL1 through to a new boss (for 7 weeks at least) for Berwick Rangers. There’s a couple of 4-4 draws thrown in there too, while we find out the secret to any potential East Stirlingshire revival.

The SPL is back, so the predictions return, with the competition tantalizingly balanced - find out who fancies Steve Lomas to claim a point in Glasgow.

Where are they Now? and Punt of the Week are in the house too.

There’s even a tale of hero-worship from a now-defunct dirt-cheap Edinburgh nightclub. 50p a drink, eh?

Enjoy the show.
